How to find (and hire) the best SEO company for your needs

We like to tell potential clients that SEO is a marathon not a sprint. That means they should expect this is not an overnight process and they need to be willing to make a commitment for at least a few months to let their campaign show results.

We tell them this for a couple reasons: 1) to set realistic expectations and 2) to let them know they will have to be comfortable working with us for an ongoing period of time.

That second part is just as important as the expectations.

To find a company to meets your needs you must feel comfortable with them. In our opinion companies that will help you feel comfortable are responsive to your questions and concerns and keep clear communication about what is being completed and what is working. Not everything is going to work — SEO is more art than science. But one thing you should know is that no one can (or should) guarantee:

  • rankings
  • specific traffic numbers
  • leads and sales

SEO agencies making these kinds of guarantees and promises are likely not following proper guidelines and it is simply unethical. SEOs have no control over search engine algorithms and to guarantee results is impossible.

To find the best SEO company for you you should look for the following things:

  • Can they show proof of past successful campaigns? Look at case studies they’ve published. Most SEO agencies will publish their best client results as a case study to show expertise.
  • Read reviews and testimonials. Check their Google reviews and see what others are saying about them.
  • Talk to them on the phone. Make sure they’re “real” people and not just taking your contract and outsourcing all the work to third-party entities. That doesn’t mean that some work can’t be outsourced — but if no one is working on your campaign in-house, then you have no idea who is working on your site and potentially representing your business.
  • Do they offer custom plans? An SEO agency should be able to provide you with a SEO plan customized to your needs. Their plans shouldn’t be boilerplate. What your business needs is going to be different from some other business.

Most people, especially business owners, have at least a passing understanding of what SEO is — but many get confused when it comes to the actual work of SEO. It’s not uncommon for us to field questions like “what exactly is an SEO company?” or “what does an SEO company do?”

An SEO company is a business or consultancy with expertise in search engine optimization. They offer services designed to help your website perform better on search engines (not just Google) when a potential customer searches for services or products you normally provide. The more highly optimized your site is, the better your chances of showing up in search results for terms and phrases relevant to your business.

Now, virtually anyone can read a few blogs, follow a “beginner’s guide to SEO” article and then claim to be an SEO — but a real SEO consultancy or company has experience and a proven track record to show their understanding of what it takes to help clients rank well and increase traffic to a site.

As we stated above, this is one of the most frequently asked questions we receive when we tell someone that we’re SEO’s. And we’ve finally come up with a great little elevator explanation to get the point across:

“As an SEO Agency we help companies increase their business from online searches and search engines like Google.”

That’s as simplistic as we can make it — but that doesn’t fully answer the question. So here’s a more thoughtful, fleshed out answer:

SEO agencies help companies increase their business from online search and search engines like Google, in the following ways:

    1. Analyzing websites: the early stages of an SEO campaign starts by doing some form of analysis of your existing website and its technical structure.
      • SEOs look at whether your site is secure (i.e, HTTPS vs HTTP)
      • Check to make sure your site is being indexed
      • Checking for Analytics tracking — if not installed, the SEO will often install it along with Google Search Console and other tracking codes as needed. This is critical for knowing how much traffic your site gets, what pages they visit, and in some instances what terms led them to click to your site.
      • Is the site mobile friendly and does the site load quickly?
      • Is the site following standard optimization recommendations (do you have relevant page titles and descriptions? are you using H1/H2 when appropriate? are images optimized with ‘alt-tags’?
      • Is the site using Schema and if it is, is it implemented properly? Schema is a type of code that helps further identify information about your website for web crawlers.
      • Is your content relevant to help you rank for important keywords (relevance can refer to whether content is topical and whether the length is in-depth enough to cover the information).
      • For local SEO clients, a thorough Name/Address/Phone Number evaluation should be performed. This is to identify any inconsistencies with your business information across local directories (very important for local/service-type businesses).
    2. Implementing on-page optimizations based on information determined in the analysis.
      • SEOs will either implement their findings directly, including editing title tags, descriptions, content, adding new pages, redirecting old pages, and other optimizations — or they will put together a list of changes that should be implemented and delivered to you for you (or your webmaster) to complete.
    3. Create content for your and/or other websites (content marketing)
      • Creating content for your site can be adding service pages or updating and improving existing pages, blogging, creating case studies, and more.
      • Content marketing is creating content with the intent of sharing it on other websites or reaching out to website owners to let them know about a relevant piece of content. This often goes hand-in-hand with link building
    4. Link building
      • Although Google claims to frown against actively building links to your website the fact remains: links are probably the number 1 ranking factor in the Google algorithm. Google’s whole search engine and PageRank algorithm was created with links in mind: “PageRank works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is. The underlying assumption is that more important websites are likely to receive more links from other websites.”
      • While other aspects of SEO can be one-time (such as optimizing your site), link building is something that needs to be done on an ongoing basis for maximum effectiveness. For many of our clients, once we have completed the analysis and optimization aspects of their campaign, the majority of their campaign revolves around content and link building.
    5. Reporting
      • As with any relationship, communication is crucial. A good SEO agency will regularly report to you the work they’re implementing and how that work has affected site, rankings, and leads.
      • Most agencies will put together some form of monthly or quarterly report and in some instances phone conferences or in-person meetings may be warranted.

In addition to the previous standard components of an SEO campaign, some agencies will also perform other task such as:

      • Social Media campaigns
      • Review acquisition strategies and implementation
      • Website design and development if needed

What you should ask an SEO company before hiring them

You should definitely ask for case studies of past campaigns they’ve completed. Hopefully you’ve researched them a bit before deciding to sign a contract. Don’t be afraid to ask to read reviews (if you haven’t already searched them online). If they were referred to you by someone you trust that’s a huge positive.

Some additional questions you should ask before signing an SEO contract:

    • What am I paying for? You should get an actual contract with a breakdown of the services and setup fees as well as on-going/recurring monthly fees. The contract should detail the work to be completed.
    • How do you end the contract? What is the process to cancel services and what costs (if any) are associated with cancelling? Some companies require written notice to cancel services. Most reputable companies will work with you to close out your account and make sure any open projects are finalized.
    • Do you have access to your site, analytics, any other accounts associated with your company? You should be granted full access to your website and analytics/search console properties. In fact you should make sure you are the “owner” on all of the accounts created/operated under your name during the SEO campaign. This includes any email or social media accounts created during the course of the contract.
    • What are your payment options/schedules? Also find out what happens in the case of late payments or missed payments. Ask if there is a discount for paying in advance.
    • Do you have experience doing SEO in my industry (or a similar industry)? Different industries have different needs. Some SEO agencies are hyper-focused on a specific industry and others are like us, focused on many types of businesses but in a region. You don’t necessarily need an SEO that focuses only on your industry, but you should feel confident they understand the needs and subtle differences within your niche.
