Google’s New /goto Redirects: What They Mean for SEO Reporting

Google’s latest URL rollout won’t harm your organic rankings, but it could distort third-party rank-tracking metrics. Here is how to verify your real search performance using first-party data.

Google is rolling out a change to how users are directed from search results to websites, and while it is unlikely to directly affect organic rankings, it could have implications for how SEO performance is measured and reported.

On August 26, 2026, Search Engine Roundtable’s Barry Schwartz reported that Google was expanding its use of google.com/goto passthrough URLs, which the company began testing in July.

Previously, clicking an organic search result typically took a user directly to the ranking webpage. With the new system, Google may first route the click through a google.com/goto URL before sending the visitor to the destination page.

The change appears largely intended to make automated scraping of Google’s search results more difficult. Google has confirmed the rollout, describing it as part of its ongoing efforts to protect its services from evolving forms of abuse,

“We have a long history of deploying technical measures against evolving forms of abuse, and we regularly take steps to protect our services and users.”

For businesses and marketers, however, the more important question is: What does this mean for SEO reporting?

Will Google’s /goto Change Affect Rankings?

At this point, there is no evidence that the change itself will negatively impact organic rankings.

Google is changing how users are routed to a website after clicking a search result, not how pages are evaluated or ranked.

Google Search Console data, including clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, is also expected to remain largely unaffected.

The bigger potential impact involves third-party SEO platforms that collect Google’s search results to track keyword rankings and competitors.

Rank-Tracking Data May Require More Scrutiny

SEO platforms rely on being able to analyze Google’s search results and determine which websites rank for specific searches.

Google’s new redirect system makes identifying the final destination of those results more complicated. Some rank-tracking providers may need to make substantially more requests to determine which pages and domains appear in the search results.

As these platforms adapt, businesses could potentially see unusual fluctuations in metrics such as:

  • #1, Top 3 and Top 10 rankings
  • Total ranking keywords
  • Search visibility
  • Share of voice
  • Competitor rankings
  • Page 1 coverage

This does not mean those metrics are no longer useful. It means significant or unexpected changes should be validated before being interpreted as an actual SEO gain or loss.

How Can You Tell If a Ranking Decline Is Real?

Suppose an SEO platform reports that a website’s #1 rankings declined 25% from one month to the next.

Normally, that would be a warning sign.

But if Google Search Console simultaneously shows stable or increasing impressions, clicks and average rankings, the decline reported by the third-party platform deserves further investigation.

In other words, the ranking report may have changed more than the actual search results.

This makes it increasingly important to evaluate SEO performance using multiple sources of data rather than relying on a single metric or platform.

Competitor Reporting Could Be Particularly Affected

Competitive SEO analysis may require even more caution.

Google Search Console provides businesses with first-party information about their own search performance, but it does not provide the same data for competitors.

Metrics such as competitor rankings, share of voice and Page 1 coverage therefore depend heavily on third-party platforms successfully collecting and interpreting Google’s search results.

If those platforms experience disruption from the /goto rollout, competitive visibility metrics could temporarily fluctuate even when the actual search landscape has changed very little.

What About GA4 Organic Traffic?

Google Analytics 4 is also worth monitoring.

Early testing suggests Google’s new redirect does not inherently interfere with the referral information used to identify Google Organic traffic. However, marketers should watch for unusual discrepancies between Google Search Console clicks and GA4 organic sessions.

The two metrics will never match exactly because they measure different things. But if Search Console shows significant growth while GA4 suddenly reports a substantial decline in Google Organic traffic, the discrepancy should be investigated before concluding that SEO performance has deteriorated.

How We Recommend Evaluating SEO Performance

During this rollout, we recommend looking at SEO performance in three layers:

  1. Google Search Console should remain the primary source for understanding organic search visibility through impressions, clicks, CTR and average position.
  2. Google Analytics 4 should be used to evaluate what happens after visitors reach the website, including organic traffic, engagement, conversions and leads.
  3. Third-party SEO platforms should continue to provide valuable keyword-ranking and competitive insights, but unusually large changes should be validated against first-party data.

This is particularly important for year-over-year comparisons. If SEO platforms modify how they collect ranking data in response to Google’s changes, current ranking data may not always be perfectly comparable with historical data collected using a different methodology.

What Businesses Need to Know

There is currently no reason for businesses to be concerned that Google’s /goto redirects will directly hurt their rankings or organic traffic.

The more immediate concern is measurement.

As third-party SEO platforms adapt to Google’s changes, some ranking and competitive metrics may require additional validation. A sudden drop in reported rankings should not automatically be interpreted as an SEO decline, particularly if Google Search Console and GA4 tell a different story.

For now, the best approach is simple: continue monitoring rankings, but place greater emphasis on first-party Google data and verify unusual changes before drawing conclusions.

Google’s search results are constantly evolving, and SEO reporting needs to evolve with them.
