SEM FAQs

What is search engine marketing (SEM)?

When the term “SEM” first began to be widely used, it was an umbrella term for all kinds of online marketing, including search engine optimization (SEO), paid search such as Google Ads, and sometimes even ads purchased on social media platforms.

As these tactics evolved, they became more distinct. Today, SEM commonly refers only to paid search, or pay-per-click (PPC) advertising, particularly on Google.

Why is SEM important to my business?

Although SEM isn’t right for every business, it has several benefits for companies of all types and sizes:

  • Paid ads appear in the top positions on search engine results pages (SERPs), above organic results. These prime spots help ensure that your ad is seen and also help boost awareness of your brand and boost name recognition.
  • SEM can quickly deliver results. While SEO results improve over time with sustained efforts, SEM can spark sales almost instantly if you have smart strategies and the right creative.
  • SEM is scalable, so you don’t need a large budget to get started. Because you don’t pay for ad until it is clicked, you can run as few or as many ads as you want in any campaign. Over time, as data is gathered and analyzed, campaigns (and their budgets) can be adjusted to continually improve results.
  • Paid ad campaigns are designed to reach your most valuable targets. Ads can be set up to meet certain criteria for geographic location, days of the week, time of day, and much more. Done right, this helps ensure that your budget isn’t wasted.

How are SEM results measured?

A number of performance factors can be measured in SEM campaigns. These include:

  • Ad impressions, or how many times the ad is shown
  • How many times an ad is clicked, or engaged with
  • How much you pay for every click on an ad
  • Which keywords drive traffic to your site
  • How many times your ad is run out of the total number of impressions that are available (impression share)
  • How many times people saw your ad and clicked through to your site

 

When you’re interviewing an SEM provider or agency, be sure to ask which metrics they use, which ones they think are the most important, and how those metrics align with and support your business goals.

How should I choose an SEM agency?

Every search engine marketing campaign is different, as is every type of SEM provider. These questions can help you accurately compare different SEM agencies or consultants:

  • How much experience do you have in paid search?
  • What kind of results has your SEM work gotten for companies like mine?
  • Do you currently work with any of my competitors?
  • How will I know how my money is being spent each month?
  • What metrics do you measure and why?
  • Can you provide references for both past and current clients?
  • How do you price your SEM services?
  • Do I have to sign a long-term contract?
  • Do you customize each client’s campaigns?
  • How often do you review campaign performance and make adjustments?

What’s the difference between SEM and search engine optimization (SEO)?

Both are designed to bring people to your website and have them engage with your company. The main difference is that with SEM, you pay a search engine to run ads; with SEO, you optimize your website so that it organically “earns” a higher/more visible spot on search engine results pages (SERPs). Each has its own place in a comprehensive digital marketing strategy.

Do I need both SEM and SEO?

Not always! We offer both of these services at DAGMAR Marketing, and many of our clients take advantage of both. For some clients, however, just one service meets their business goals, and we don’t sell our clients any services they don’t need.
